I dont come here as often as I once did, but I do read sparingly and you are among the posters I try to "catch." Thank you for your caring and balanced comments.
Two individuals who have devoted untold time and effort to the x-JW cause are not likely to be mentioned in threads like this one. The first man Id like to mention is Dr Muramoto. He never posts here and probably never will, but he has devoted countless hours to the blood issue. He helps JWs and former JWs immensely through his efforts to educate the medical community about the problems unique to the JW world.
Many of you are aware of some of the articles he has been able to get published to prominent medical journals. He has also taken many hours away from his own patients to stand around medical exhibits talking to physicians about the JW-blood issue. He is one of the more brilliant, yet caring persons I have had the pleasure of knowing.
The other person I want to mention in this thread is Lee Elder. He has almost single-handedly setup AJWRB.ORG and kept it going. His efforts were of immense help to me after I personally faced the blood issue. I faced what some JW will eventually face: take blood or die. I thought I was all alone in my fight. I felt hopeless. When I later discovered LEs site I was dumb-founded. Here was another JW with views similar to mine. It was of immense help. I know he has helped thousands of others. He brought Dr Muramoto and others together in a common cause: helping JW and x-JWs cope with the murderous WTS blood policy.

the british journal of hematology 2002 119 25-37 makes interesting reading in its article by judith marsh and david bevan entitled 'haematological care of jehovahs witnesses'.
nothing new, but in view of what i heard recently from an jw acquaintance working in the hematology department of a local hospital it gave me some food for thought.
the long article necessarily of a scientific nature and therefore without any noted bias makes this point regarding the alteration in policy by the wts toward those jws who take blood transfusions as a matter of choice: .

The role of physicians and surgeons is often very difficult, especially when it comes to JWs and the blood issue. Dr Muramoto has written eloquently on this subject. His methods include "rational non-interventional paternalism." You can read more about it here:

I am a little surprised to learn that "whole blood" is apparently used so frequently in the UK. Is this really the practice? In the states it is rare for whole blood to be transfused. Instead, individual parts (fractions) are usually administered; though these "parts" may be complex, such as plasma. Cynics claim that this approach is just so that the patient can be charged more for each component. Others state that the appropriate "fraction" is given to meet the particular need of each patient, allowing for better use of the somewhat limited blood supply.

I am sorry that you are offended by several comments above. Some of us have had extensive experience in the JW world and with the blood issue. I will try to respond more tomorrow when I have the time.
It is obvious that you are a sincere person. I for one am glad that you posted this topic. If the WTS was behind this donation, it marks a first of its kind, I think. That makes it interesting!

There are a number of things wrong with what you have said above. Their decision about blood usually has little to do with their faith or interpretation of the Bible; it has everything to do with what the WTS says. When the WTS said vaccinations were wrong JWs did not get vaccines. When the ban was lifted most JWs, especially their children got vaccines. Same with "blood fractions." When all blood components were banned JW abided by the rules. When, over time, more and more "fractions were allowed JWs used them as needed in hospitals wherever the word of the WTS latest direction had spread.
Cell saver machines do nothing for the trauma patient, injured in some remote location who is brought into the ER in shock with a Hb of less than 5 and still bleeding. It does nothing for the cancer patient whose red cells are depleted by their disease and by the cancer therapy. It does nothing for the end-stage hepatic disease patient whos liver can not make many blood components including clotting factors. The list could go on, but you get the idea.
Cell saver machines are good for a particular "elective situation only. The WTS will not educate its followers in its limitations and will not admit that there are many medical situations where blood is needed for which it has no ready answer. Many JWs adhere to the blood policy of the WTS only because of the threat of Dfing. Those WTS leaders who continue to insist on adherence to the blood policy are nothing less than murderers. Those leaders who stand by and watch JWs die because of the blood policy are co-conspirators, murderers.
